Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach New Carriage Agreement

In a significant development for sports fans, Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have reached a new carriage agreement, effectively ending a months-long blackout of Bally Sports channels for Comcast customers. This collaboration paves the way for fans to catch their favorite local teams starting at the beginning of August.

Bringing Sports Back to Fans

Diamond Sports Group, which owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, has been navigating bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11 for the past 16 months. This struggle led to the channels going off the air at the start of May, leaving fans in a lurch. However, this new agreement marks a critical step forward in resolving the blackout and allowing Comcast subscribers to once again access their beloved sports content.

"Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity," said David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.

Opportunity for Fan Engagement

With this agreement, Xfinity customers who subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package will be able to watch live, local MLB, NBA, and NHL games. Comcast, which has a strong presence in markets such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, will begin offering this package by early August. Fans of the Braves, Twins, and other local teams can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Moreover, Diamond Sports Group's Bally Sports streaming app continues to provide an in-market viewing option for fans of the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. However, fans of the Braves and Twins will need to utilize the broadcast channels for their local game coverage.

Limited-Time Offer

Xfinity customers are encouraged to act quickly, as they have until August 30 to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package. Those who subscribe will enjoy a free three-month trial period, after which the package will cost an additional $20 per month. This limited-time offer presents an excellent opportunity for fans to catch up on all the sports action they missed during the blackout.

Focus on Restructuring

As Diamond Sports Group continues its reorganization efforts, securing agreements with major leagues remains a priority. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," Preschlack added.

He further emphasized the urgency of these efforts: "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court."

Planning for the Future

Diamond Sports Group, which currently holds linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams, is determined to finalize these agreements to ensure uninterrupted service for fans. The company's ability to align with key partners will be crucial in presenting a viable plan of reorganization to the court, setting the stage for a stable and prosperous future.

In the meantime, fans and subscribers alike can look forward to resuming their regular sports broadcast routines, cheering on their local teams, and enjoying the excitement of professional sports once again. This new carriage deal symbolizes a hopeful new chapter for Diamond Sports Group and the countless sports enthusiasts they serve.
