Phoenix Suns Sign Point Guard Tyus Jones to One-Year, $3.3 Million Deal

Tyus Jones, the experienced point guard, has sealed a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Phoenix Suns. This strategic move places Jones, who is 28 years old, on a rapidly evolving roster that includes prominent players such as Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal.

An Experienced Guard Joins the Suns

Jones, who showcased his playmaking abilities with the Washington Wizards during the 2023-24 season, averaged 12.0 points and 7.3 assists per game. His performance in Washington was a continuation of his steady development since his early years in the NBA. Beginning his professional career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he spent his first four seasons from 2015 to 2019, Jones gradually carved out a reputation as a dependable point guard.

Jones's journey also includes a notable four-year tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies. During the 2022 playoffs with the Grizzlies, he averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals over 12 games, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. This experience will undoubtedly be invaluable for the Suns as they pursue their championship ambitions.

A Thoughtful Decision

In a reflection of his thoughtful approach to career decisions, Jones explained his choice to join the Phoenix Suns. "The chance to play for the Phoenix Suns made the most sense on a lot of levels to me and my family—beginning with the way [governor] Mat Ishbia and the front office recruited me to how coach [Mike Budenholzer] showed me how I can significantly impact a team that has a real opportunity to challenge for an NBA title as their starting point guard," Jones shared.

Jones’s agent, Bradbury, played a crucial role in navigating the free agent landscape. According to Jones, Bradbury walked him and his family through several offers and sign-and-trade proposals at various financial levels. Ultimately, it was the Suns' proposition that stood out. "My agent [Bradbury] walked me and my family through multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals at a number of different financial levels, but the Suns' opportunity is where I can best maximize my value for a return to free agency next year as well as give myself a chance to be part of what I think will be a special team and season," Jones explained.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

The Suns’ offer to Jones comes at a veteran's minimum salary, reflecting both the team's salary cap considerations and their strategic vision. With Jones onboard, the Suns are vying to enhance their backcourt dynamism and add a layer of strategic depth, particularly in their pursuit of an NBA title.

With their ambitious roster in place, the Phoenix Suns are positioning themselves as strong contenders for the upcoming season. As Jones steps into this new chapter of his career, the basketball world will be watching closely to see how his veteran presence and playmaking skills will mesh with the prowess of Booker, Durant, and Beal. For Jones, it is not just another contract; it's an opportunity to make a significant impact and potentially guide the Suns to the pinnacle of NBA success.
