Tee Higgins and Bengals Head Toward Season Under Franchise Tag
The Cincinnati Bengals and wide receiver Tee Higgins find themselves at a crucial juncture after failing to reach a long-term contract extension before the NFL's July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players. Higgins, a vital component of the Bengals' offense, will now play the 2024 season under the franchise tag.
Higgins stands out as the lone player among the league's eight franchise-tagged individuals this offseason who did not secure a new contract. On June 15, 2024, he signed his one-year franchise tender, which guarantees him $21.816 million for the upcoming season.
Despite the significant paycheck, contract negotiations have been a tumultuous journey for Higgins and the Bengals. The wide receiver, who skipped the team's mandatory minicamp while seeking a lucrative extension, also requested a trade after being tagged in February 2024. The Bengals, however, declined to grant his trade request, hoping to retain his talents on their roster.
The Bengals initially placed the franchise tag on Higgins in late February 2024, a move that underscores his value to the team. Since being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Clemson, Higgins has consistently proven his worth. He has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving twice in his four seasons with the Bengals and has posted at least five touchdowns each season.
Last season, Higgins faced challenges due to a hamstring injury, which limited him to 12 games. Despite the setback, he managed to accumulate 656 yards and five touchdowns on 42 receptions, showcasing his resilience and skill on the field.
Head coach Zac Taylor expressed optimism regarding Higgins' return to the team, emphasizing the wide receiver's professionalism amid the contract discussions. "I'm excited to move forward with Tee. He's done a great job handling his situation, and we are happy to get him back in the fold so we can start working toward a great 2024 season. The locker room will be excited to have him back around," Taylor remarked.
Higgins' situation mirrors those of past Bengals players who have faced similar franchise tag scenarios. Defensive back Jessie Bates III and offensive lineman Jonah Williams both played out their tagged seasons with the team before exploring free agency possibilities. Bates ultimately left in free agency, while Williams also played his tagged season before seeking new opportunities.
As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Higgins as he takes the field, aiming to make a significant impact and further solidify his reputation as one of the league's top wide receivers. The Bengals, meanwhile, will be looking to maximize their offensive potential with Higgins in the lineup, hoping that the ongoing contract saga doesn't overshadow their on-field ambitions.
