The Tennessee Titans unveiled a host of new faces and strategic changes as they opened their first training camp session to reporters on Wednesday. Following an offseason marked by significant roster moves, the team is gearing up for what promises to be a transformative season.
New Offensive and Defensive Talent
Wide receivers Tyler Boyd and Calvin Ridley, two notable additions to the Titans' roster, took to the practice field, joining forces with cornerback L'Jarius Sneed. Their presence is expected to fortify the team's offensive and defensive units, adding depth and skill to both sides of the ball.
The defense, in particular, is undergoing a meaningful transition under Dennard Wilson, the newly appointed defensive coordinator. With fresh leadership at the helm, the defensive unit has adopted an aggressive approach, as highlighted by players Jeffery Simmons and Arden Key emphasizing ball-stripping during drills.
Rookies Making Their Mark
T'Vondre Sweat, the Titans' second-round pick, showcased his prowess in 11-on-11 sessions after missing OTA activities. Sweat, who had an outstanding college career and was named a unanimous All-American and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, appears to be quickly catching up. Speaking about his confidence, Sweat remarked, "Oh, I love that, most likely I am going to be a Hall of Famer."
Meanwhile, JC Latham, the Titans' first-round pick, is transitioning from right tackle to left tackle. The offensive line is undergoing considerable adjustments to accommodate Latham's shift and to bolster its overall effectiveness. Latham discussed the intensity of the training camp, stating, "It was great, it was competitive. Fast, you know, everybody is here, everybody is competing for a spot and that's what you're here for."
Due to a knee cleanup procedure, Nicholas Petit-Frere has started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. In addition, he will miss the first six games of the season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy. To fill the gap on the right side, John Ojukwu and Jaelyn Duncan received significant reps during the 11-on-11 sessions.
Quarterback and Coaching Dynamics
Will Levis is poised to embark on his first full season as the Titans' starting quarterback. In preparation, Levis organized workouts in Cabo with some of his key pass-catchers, fostering chemistry and timing ahead of the season. The Titans' front office has displayed their confidence in Levis by appointing an offensive-minded head coach, further aligning the team’s strategy around their new quarterback.
Injuries and Absences
On the field, punter Ryan Stonehouse has made a notable return after suffering a significant leg injury last year—a development that will no doubt have fans and coaches breathing a sigh of relief. However, the Titans were without backup center/offensive guard Daniel Brunskill and pass rusher Harold Landry during the initial practice, which could be a concern as the team prepares for the weeks ahead.
The initial training camp sessions have provided a glimpse into the Tennessee Titans' acumen for adaptation and strategy execution, setting an energetic tone for the upcoming season. As new and returning players find their footing, the transformation initiated in the offseason will begin to take full effect on the field.
