The Anaheim Ducks are set to revolutionize their local game broadcasts by combining direct-to-consumer streaming with traditional local broadcasts. This strategic move aims to bolster accessibility for fans across the Ducks' TV market.
In a significant shift, 65 of the Ducks' games next season will be broadcast over-the-air on a Los Angeles channel, specifically Channel 13. All games will be available for streaming regionally on the Victory+ streaming service, which will be free of charge to viewers. Victory+ will operate as a free, ad-supported platform, ensuring broad access without financial barriers.
The change comes after the expiration of the Ducks' contract with Diamond Sports Group, which concluded at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently embroiled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, was the Ducks' previous broadcaster. The upheaval provided a timely juncture for the Ducks to explore new broadcasting avenues.
According to Jason Walsh, Chief Operating Officer for A Parent Media, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This dual expertise has likely paved the way for the new arrangement, partnering with A Parent Media.
The Ducks' regional territory is extensive, covering Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. This diverse area stands to benefit greatly from the enhanced accessibility that the Ducks' new broadcasting strategy promises.
Aaron Teats, President of the Ducks, emphasized the organization's commitment to fan engagement, stating, “We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge.” This approach aligns with the Ducks' priority to connect with their fan base throughout the region, enabling every fan to watch games at no cost across multiple, accessible platforms.
The launch of the Victory+ app is set for September, expanding the options for fans to watch games on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones. This development underscores the Ducks' forward-thinking approach to modern broadcasting, leveraging technology to maintain and grow their fanbase.
The changing landscape of sports broadcasting is not unique to the Ducks. The Florida Panthers have announced a transition of their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. Diamond Sports Group, despite its financial troubles, will continue to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and holds agreements with major teams like the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
For fans, the continuity of familiar voices will be a comfort. Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain as part of the Ducks' broadcast team, providing consistency and familiarity moving forward.
In summing up the strategic shift, Teats noted, “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.” This innovation in broadcasting underscores the Ducks' commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that passionate hockey fans across their territory can stay connected with their favorite team without financial constraints.
With these changes, the Ducks are poised to set a new standard in how regional sports networks operate, making their games more accessible than ever before.
